First you have to understand why people are using the Internet - It is a searching tool for finding high value information that will fulfill a wish or solve a troublesome problem or both.
If you have a storefront (brick & mortar) business, your customers can walk by your store, enter it and begin to build a relationship with you. Not so on the Internet. People are not looking for you or your businesss, they searching for information, for solutions.
Online, you must provide information (content) that people are searching for and you must generate your own traffic to be profitable. You must build this relationship. Your website must be a content-based website with focused web pages delivering the required content that people are searching for.
If you deliver high value content this will help build credibility and retain your visitors turning them into ready to buy customers.
Each webpage must have a "most wanted" response. When your potential customer is searching, finds your webpage, what is the webpage wanting the potential customer to do. Make a purchase, call you, complete a form, come by for a visit, clip a coupon, and the list goes on.
To improve your traffic, you must satisfy not only the search engines but also your potential customers. When you are on the top page of Google and do not hav a good description of your webpage you will not get the intended traffic. Even if someone clicks on your webpage, if you do not deliver the content, then they will simply click the back button.
You also have to understand the eventually you will lose all of your web traffic. At some point they simply turn off the computer, but your job is to get them to your webpage, deliver excellent content and turn them into a buying customer.
